Fort St. John Mens Basketball Championship Results
 Posted on: Apr 06/2016 @ 8:43 pm

Championship night was last week and the games didn’t disappoint!

We started with the 3rd place game that pitted the ever undermanned Red squad up against the ever undermanned White team… and this game was no different as it was 6 vs 6. That didn’t stop either team from looking for the fast break or Team White from playing an up tempo style that saw them score 40 in the first half to lead by 13 points. White was carried all game by Lance Martin as he played his best game of the year scoring 15 in the first half and adding 12 in the second. And that second half dozen was needed since Team Red’s top trio of John Zaleski, Paul Gill and Ahmed Isse all scored 10 points in the second half, cutting the lead to 4 points with less than 6 minutes left in the game. In the end, White hung on for a 68-64 victory to take the 3rd place game.

The second game of the night was for the CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE, where Team Black squared off against Team Blue. This was a tremendous game even with both teams down key guys; Blue missing Chris Flury’s and Andrew Colman’s solid rebounding and team play, while Team Black were down their big man and a top scoring option in Dan Penner. It was Blue that found rhythm early distributing the ball well amongst their top four scorers (Jake Hyrcha – 22, Logan Harder – 21, Steven Smith – 13 and Peter Houston – 11) countered by a superman effort from Black’s Alex Neily who put up the biggest number on this year’s scoresheet with 37 points. Down by 6 after the first half, Black leaned on Alex for more scoring, but it was a pair of 3s by each of Nick Donnelly and Joe Mumma that put them close to Team Blue, and a late foul on a driving Byron Grady put him on the foul line down 2 points with 4 seconds to play. Byron got a shooter’s roll on both free throws and sent the game into overtime locked up 70-70. The 5-minute extra period saw play tighten up with very little scoring from either side… in fact, it was the only field goal scored in the OT that won the Championship as Jake Hyrcha knocked down a 3 to cement his team’s 73-71 victory.

Congrats Team Blue on your Championship season!!

Thanks to everyone that participated for making this a great reboot for the FSJ Men’s Basketball League, with a big shout out to referee Colin Ziebart and scorekeepers Lukas Rehberg and Chris Legg for all their hard work.
